Returning for his second season with The Scarborough Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Douglas will this year be sharing his talents with us as Jack Point.
A baritone of great warmth and charm, this Canadian artist has an abundance of talent with a natural affinity for stage work. This was well proven in his portrayal of Major General Stanley in the 2005 production of The Pirates of Penzance.
A graduate of St. Michael's Choir School in Toronto, he studied piano, organ, and choral singing before 'discovering' a fondness for solo singing.
After initial voice lessons with Giuseppe Macina, Mr. Tranquada furthered his voice development under the late Louis Quilico, who described him as having a voice of 'exceptional beauty', which eventually landed him a position with Toronto's internationally renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Chamber Choir.
On the operatic stage, he performed numerous roles with Toronto Opera Repertoire among which were Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, Schaunard in La Bohème, Dandini in La Cenerentola, the Notary in Don Pasquale, the title role in Rigoletto, Renato in Un Ballo In Maschera, the lead role in Don Giovanni, the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, the roles of Escamillo and Morales in Carmen, and as Germont in La Traviata.
Having impressed as the notary in Don Pasquale for Opera York, he further excelled in the dual roles of Benoit and Alcindoro in the 2005 production of La Boheme. The 2006 season will feature him in the Puccini classic Gianni Schicchi.
He also performed in guest engagements with Opera Mississauga under Maestro Dwight Bennett as Yakuside in Madame Butterfly and as Fiorello in The Barber of Seville.
As a guest performer with Tryptych Productions, he has performed Angelotti in Tosca as well as Tonuelo in Hugo Wolf's Der Corregidor.
In the area of oratorio music, he has performed Handel's Messiah with the Northumberland Symphony Orchestra and also with the World Youth Day Choir and The Sacred Music Society Messiah under the baton of Maestro Uwe Lieflander at Toronto's Convocation Hall.
Douglas has also had many collaborative efforts with the McMaster University Choir under Philip Sarabura.
In a totally different setting, Mr. Tranquada is an anthem singer for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, and Toronto Rock. He is also a member of the accapella singing group 'The Mistletones' bringing a unique character to Christmas music.
